Sado Day 2

July 30th, 2002

Good Morning

Kids in Japan have homework during Summer vacation. They have to do a little every day.  I can help with the math but am stumped on the sciences when I have to read the Japanese.

Today started off very well. The kids woke up in a good mood and came over for breakfast. After breakfast we broke camp and did the morning chores. Dusty did his homework and Mary fed the baby.

Hiking Down to the Beach

Now the hard part... it seems that the beautiful beach is down at the bottom of a cliff.   So I had to walk down about a 1000 steps that were carved in the cliff carrying the baby and beach supplies while wearing flip-flops.  Mighty difficult, I’ll tell you what, but it was worth it.

Cool, Clean Water

Looking for Crabs

When we arrived there was only one other family.  The beach was made of small stones with crabs and other sea animals playing in it. The water was cool, but not cold and very clean. The small islands in the water looked fun to climb, but we went out to one and they are ignius strata (sharp volcanic rock that cut your feet) so we gave that up right quick.  We played there till everyone started to pink up and we went to find showers and lunch.

Safe to Play

We ate lunch at the Onegame lodge. Ramen (no we didn’t eat seafood, so stop asking). Then we cruised down the coast.  I’m glad we brought Mary’s car because we had to stop and back up several times on narrow mountian roads to let tour busses and the like pass us. The scenery was breathtaking (and a little virtigo inducing). We had a great ride. Then at the kid’s incessent urging we stopped at Kinzan (Gold Mountian).

After Kinzan we loaded up on drinks at a convienince store and went to find Sobame campground.  This campground was very different from Futatsugame.  Lots of kids in groups, people shooting fireworks, just a more festive atmosphere. We pitched camp and noticed it was on an ant hill, so we move 2 feet over and put the tents on platforms. While I blew up the bed, Mary made Yakisoba for dinner.

The kids’ flashlight died so I had to get them a lantern so they would sleep in their own tent.  It had a button that made it flash red like a police light. Too cool.
