This year Dusty is in 1st grade so he can pull the neighborhood dashi with his friends. They pull a big portable shrine from house to house and sing and dance for the good fortune of the people who live there. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not easy. It is hard hot work, but there is a point of pride in being old enough to be a part of the community. Plus the participants get snacks and drinks and lots of praise from the older members.
