Setting Up BearShare

Mary and the kids are still sleeping because we we’re up late last night. But I couldn’t wait to get to Japajim Central this morning; as of today we are going out via DSL. It’s not the fastest connection on the planet or even in Japan but it is broadband and it is 24/7.  So I can leave it on all the time - doing downloads and hosting files.  I set up Bearshare (www.bearshare.com) as my peer-to-peer service of choice and MS Messenger as my main A/V chat client.

Now what does all this mean. It means I can chat / swap files, listen to worldwide radio, watch TV and just have alot of fun and not worry about the telephone charge.

Does everyone know how long I waited for 24/7 broadband. A few years ago I installed a Sat. connection (DirectPC) but it was really expensive.  Then came ISDN with telehodia but that was only limited to night time usage 11PM~8AM. Finally I have it and although I’m too far from the DSL relay station to get full speed I can pull 900 kbps which is resonably impressive since I used to be limited to 64kbps.

This is how I plan to spend the rest of the day.
Later all.

Update:
Mary woke up at 7:00 and got the newspaper.  There was an ad for K’s Denki that had a waffle iron for sale.  New Years bargain.  So we went at 8:00 to stand in line for the store to open at 10. Mary stood in the cold for 2 hours while I provided food, hot drinks and babysitting.  She got her waffle iron and I got an electric toothbrush.

Next we cleaned house and took down the Christmas Tree.  I didn’t get back to Japajim till evening...

Update:  I bought a new router.  Linksys.  More configurability and protection.  I’m now essentially invisible to random port scans and hacks.

Update:
August 2002: I have chosen KaZaa as my full time file shareing program. Basically it is so popular that I can get almost any TV show I want. Back shows and current.  Trouble is that I am having to limit my uploads due to bandwidth limitations. Kazaa

Update:
September 2002:  Trillian has finally come out with a stable multiclient IM. I have tested and currently am in love with the Pro version.  It monitors all my POP boxes, freemail at yahoo and hotmail as well as chatting with my friends and family on MS, Yahoo, AOL, and ICQ. Wheeeeeee. I recommend it.  If ya can’t afford the reg fee there is a free version. Cerulean Studios' Trillian

Update:
November 2002: My ADSL was upgraded to 8M/s It is much speedier. I can browse and do all my uploads and downloads at the same time.
